Alex Macon
Online Managing Editor, D Magazine
I grew up in the Dallas suburbs and decided early on that I wanted to be a writer, because I liked reading and thought it would be a decent way to avoid ever holding down a real job. At the University of North Texas in Denton, I was steered toward journalism by a chain-smoking, ink-stained, no-nonsense old professor, Kathie Hinnen, who became the only role model to never let me down. My pretensions at being a gonzo lunatic author a la Hunter S. Thompson were happily erased by my time at the student newspaper, the North Texas Daily, which introduced me to many lifelong friends and gave me a newfound respect for unglamorous, authentic news reporting.
After graduating in 2012, I went to work for the Galveston County Daily News, an extremely unglamorous and authentic posting that had me reporting on murders, school board politics, and high school volleyball, among all the other subjects covered in the state’s oldest daily newspaper. In late 2014 I moved back to Dallas and was hired by D Magazine to be the magazine’s online arts editor, which got me into a lot of concerts and art galleries over the next two and a half years. Suddenly, it was OK to write some things in the first person. Glamour, at last.
I was promoted to be D Magazine’s online managing editor in the summer of 2017. I now spend my days writing, editing, and assigning stories for the website of the city magazine of Dallas. I also repackage and schedule print content from the magazine for the web, and work with a team of designers and other editors to, generally speaking, make sure the website is a compelling place to visit. Along with those journalism-centric duties, I am involved in some aspects of D Magazine’s audience engagement efforts, which include working on search engine optimization, social media, and online analytics. I live in Dallas, and am constantly amazed that I can make a living doing this.
